Turn Your Master Bedroom into a Presidential Suite
If the bedroom is where the day begins and ends, it deserves more than just a comfortable bed and blackout curtains. It deserves grandeur, purpose, and design excellence.
Turning your master bedroom into a presidential suite isn’t about opulence alone; it’s about creating a space that feels curated, multifunctional, and inspiring.
With thoughtful design choices and smart spatial planning, you can transform even a modest room into a luxurious suite.
Here’s how:
1. Create Distinct Zones
One of the key elements that takes a bedroom from functional to luxurious is the thoughtful creation of dedicated zones. Rather than limiting your bedroom to sleep alone, treat it like a suite by dividing it into harmonious spaces:
· Sleep Zone: Let the bed remain the star of the show. Anchor it with striking black and gold bedside tables – an instantly luxe combination that screams sophistication. Opt for a headboard in plush velvet or an upholstered finish to add softness and grandeur. Keep the bedding layered, rich in texture, and tonal for a cohesive, elevated look.
Lounge Zone: Just a sofa and a small coffee table can make all the difference. This creates a space where you can unwind, read, or enjoy a quiet cup of coffee before the chaos of the day begins. If you’re working with limited square meterage, choose a compact, curved sofa to soften the angles of the room. The coffee table should echo this curve, creating visual symmetry and a cohesive design narrative.
2. Let Form Follow Function
When designing a master bedroom suite, functionality doesn’t have to come at the expense of aesthetics. Every piece you choose should not only serve a purpose but contribute to the overall design language.
For example, the coffee table in our Decorex 2025 stand wasn’t just a surface for books and cups, it was a sculptural piece in its own right. Its warm wooden base and circular stone top echoed the curved sofa beside it, creating continuity and balance.
By choosing furniture pieces with intention – curved lines, mixed materials, and layered textures – you ensure that your room feels cohesive and complete, rather than like a collection of unrelated items.
3. Compact Luxury
For this year’s 100% Design Africa exhibition, our interior design studio created a striking master bedroom suite that proved just how much luxury you can pack into a relatively compact footprint. Drawing inspiration from the seventies and reinventing it through a futuristic lens, we played with sleek retro curves, tactile finishes, and on-trend colours to craft a space that felt both nostalgic and next-generation.
The standout colour palette featured the season’s most stylish shades: a moody burgundy, a grounding deep blue, and a playful mustard accent. These hues, though bold, were softened by the use of plush velvet upholstery, which we incorporated with embossed motifs to add texture and depth. This material choice was another subtle nod to the seventies but deployed in a way that felt fresh, not dated.
4. The Power of Materials and Texture
Presidential suites are not only defined by their layout, but also by their tactile richness. Think of the soft brush of velvet under your fingertips, the cool solidity of stone, the warm grain of wood. These materials bring a sensory depth and deep experience.
Velvet, in particular, is making a major comeback. In our Decorex suite, we used it on the sofa and ottoman to create a sense of plush indulgence. By tufted detail, you can add dimension and make a real design statement.
5. Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches
Just like a presidential suite in a five-star hotel, your bedroom should have that extra layer of thoughtfulness. Layered lighting is key: combine ambient lighting with reading lamps and hidden LED strips for a warm, luxurious glow.
Artworks, sculptural decor, and fresh flowers will make the space feel lived-in yet elegant. And always pay attention to scent – whether it's a luxury candle, linen spray, or essential oil diffuser, scent is the final layer that brings atmosphere and calm.
Final Word
Your master bedroom should feel like your sanctuary: a space where beauty meets purpose and every element feels considered. With clever zoning, smart layout choices, and a mix of tactile materials and on-trend colour, you can elevate your bedroom into something truly extraordinary.
